Even if you do not have a sweet tooth, you are bound to enjoy the traditional Portuguese custard tarts which you encounter in many of the cafes in Portugal. They are called Pasteis de Nata and are addictively delicious. I still do know if they are best with or with out an additional sprinkling of cinnamon on top. But do know that I enjoy sampling them both with and without that additive that is commonly provided with the purchase of one.

I have of course made them at home, as it is not convenient for me to limit my intake of these delights to a visit to a café. Here is the recipe that I work with. Hope you give it a try, either when visiting Portugal or by making your very own from the recipe, it is really worth it.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 1/2 vanilla bean
  • 3 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 6 egg yolks
  • 1 (17.5 ounce) package puff pastry

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C.) Lightly grease 12 muffin cups and line bottom and sides with puff pastry.
  2. In a saucepan, combine milk, cornstarch, sugar and vanilla. Cook, stirring constantly, until mixture thickens. Place egg yolks in a medium bowl. Slowly whisk 1/2 cup of hot milk mixture into egg yolks. Gradually add egg yolk mixture back to remaining milk mixture, whisking constantly. Cook, stirring constantly, for 5 minutes, or until thickened. Remove vanilla bean.
  3. Fill pastry-lined muffin cups with mixture and bake in preheated oven for 20 minutes, or until crust is golden brown and filling is lightly browned on top
