Though many may be familiar with the wonderful dishes traditional to Portugal, the beautiful handicrafts have received less attention in recent years. Upon arrival to a locally based restaurant though, you can expect to be treated to being served in lovely tureens, being surrounded by decorative tiles. If you are particularly lucky you may also encounter the hand-embroidered Madeira lace and linen sometimes used as placemats or tablecloths. I have found the most exceptional examples of these handicrafts in the rural restaurants we happen upon. The hard part has been locating products similar in quality to those used by the restaurateurs. One tends to think that some of them might be from an old family supply, or that the best ones are snatched up by the locals.

However, if you will be spending time in the more populated, cities you should still find good examples. To increase your chances order the more famous dishes, like cataplana. These will more commonly come with a bit of pomp and circumstance, along with the beautiful cooking containers made specifically for the preparation of such meals. Quiet often the servers faces will brighten up if you request things like razor clams or raw oysters. These are less frequently the choice of the tourists who frequent their restaurants.

Don’t be surprised when you find yourself popping in to the road side shops that sell these traditional products, along with a bunch of other things like belts, handbags and wallets made from cork. In case you didn’t know the greatest supply of the world’s cork comes from Portugal. Therefore, aside from the items I have mentioned, you will almost certainly come across some intriguing other products made from cork also. These make wonderful gifts for those back home, so stock up when you get a chance.

Depending on where you choose to spend your holiday, you will either happen upon a few, or quite a few, shops that sell these art crafts. If you are renting a vehicle you may be in an area where pottery shops, sheds and even shacks are set up. Once inside, more often than not you will find they sell much more than just platters, dishes, or vases. The Portuguese are not only known for their lace workmanship, but do very fine embroidery as well. Thus, you might depart with a whole collection of hand embroidered materials including handkerchiefs, or the iconic fado shawl. Your first sighting of such a shawl will take place if you stick around after your meal for the night’s entertainment.

Needless to say, we have had one heck of a hard time trying to find art for our walls here in Portugal. Yes, we can go to inner city stores to get “something” but none of it was of high quality, or our style. However, I have been taking some watercolour painting lessons in the Algarve with a delightful teacher named Gabriella and have tons of my own artwork- or attempts at artwork of my own stored in a wardrobe.

It dawned on me that I could turn it into wall art, and that readers who are not creating anything themselves presently can do the same with their children’s art. Hence, I decided to share my way of decorating the walls here, because once I had completed the project it was not just makeshift, it was quite lovely. First, purchase 12 inch by 16 inch stretched canvases and paint them all the same colour. For whatever reason the shops where we live have tons of these, little by way of supplies to paint on them, but loads of the canvases. Next, cut a piece of corrugated cardboard and insert in the back of the frame, behind the canvas. Finally, hang the canvases next to one another, and tack any artwork you like onto it (see that’s where that cardboard comes in handy). If you are really at a loss, you can always separate images from the months of a calendar that you like and pin those onto the boards. Well, you get the idea anyway. Happy crafting.

If you are at all familiar with rural Portugal, then you know how the land is speckled with ruins. The remnants of family dwellings, barns, and other structures are abundant, and ripe for repair. Though a great number of the buildings would never be considered to be brought back to life in their original form, many are for sale. They are on the market to be rebuilt, most on the same layout, or square footage.

This is convenient for those accustomed with the traditional methods of construction used in Portugal. But, for those of us who came from a different strategy, efforts made on one’s own can make a sizeable difference. In fact, I would implore anyone moving from outside of the country to be very diligent in supervising work, and making demands that standards be followed.

Specifically, if you are renovating an old property, pay close attention to the way insulation is done, and the way appliances are installed. By taking a good look at the remnants of the items that previously inhabited the space you will get an idea of what I am warning you of. This is not to say you can’t get things done right, you can. But, if you are not clear in your wishes, and adamant about your expectations, things can go wrong, just as they can in any country. Take heed of this message, for if you do not pay attention, you may find you greatly regret it in the long run, as so many who came before you have done.

Believe it or not I have not made my way to the beautiful Azores. I know, I know it seems like a must do thing when you are a homeowner in the country of Portugal. Alas, in the past whenever I looked into the flights over there, they were mighty pricey. Being that they are off the West of the mainland, I could see why it may be expensive to go to an island destination, but then again I never thought it was worth what they were asking.

Well, you and I are both in luck as those nine islands have become easier to reach and cheaper. Due to the economic situation that Portugal has found itself in, there have been significant decreases in the cost of hotels and the price for holidaying over there has become closer to reasonable, in fact some are calling it a bargain.

In case you are unfamiliar with this destination, you will find black beaches and crater lakes. Plus, the architecture is renowned for its baroque style, and beauty. In addition, not only is it less expensive to get over to one of the islands, it is now actually convenient to travel amongst them, whereas just a few short years ago it was considered quite the ordeal. Azores here I come!

Though they seemed to be working on it for a lot longer than they originally estimated, the Cascade Wellness and Lifestyle Resort in Lagos is up and in nearly full swing. It boasts of many things which I find appealing in a holiday destination, such as a Moorish deign with modern day high end amenities. It does describe itself as five star after all, so a beautiful layout and design is to be expected. But, it is the unexpected that grabs my attention, and that is what I find in the Cascade Performance Sports Academies.

From what I have been able to find out, through both word of mouth, and the website the intent is to have at least three fields of interest covered by academies. These include football, tennis, and golf. But, while the resort is open, these are still works in progress and the expected opening dates for these are in 2012.

Many locals herald this as a major achievement, and anticipate it will bring in crowds with an interest in excelling in these areas. To bolster this excitement, there are a couple of big names in these sports affiliated with these academies. As I have been following the progress of this establishment for years now, I will be quite eager to see it finally completed, and to witness its full blown success.

When you travel to a country that is steeped in history, it is always expected that you will dine in restaurants that reflect that fact. In Portugal, you will not be disappointed in what you find, as the dishes they serve, as well as the décor are not far from what was available in the past. This certainly does add to the ambience, and leaves guests feeling as though they have stepped back in time, as they wished to do.

One thing that I have seen many a visitor reflect upon, aside from the presentation and assembly of a good old hearty cataplana is how ingenious some restaurateurs have become in the set up of their places. In and around the region that we live in we can pop into a local spot and watch the chef prepare fresh fish, chicken, or pork on an open grill. Though I know this has been laid out this way because their was simply no other way, it is quite nice. The fragrance fills the air of the very meal you are preparing to indulge in, and the freshness of the ingredients is confirmed through the very sight of it as it is carried over to be laid down on the grill. A lot can be observed, and enjoyed at such old fashioned establishments.

Those of you living elsewhere might view living in the middle of nowhere a dreamy existence. There is a real romantic air that comes with the idea of residing on a piece of farmland separated from neighbours by kilometers, and within a five minute drive to a breathtaking beach. But there is a reason why people who actually live in the sticks nearly always will tell you to be careful what you wish for. There are too many creature comforts we go with out to name, so here’s one of the ones I miss most, Silentnight Mattresses. Now, it is true that if I took some rather extreme measures I could probably get one of them out to my place, but that is just the point. Part of the glory of creature comforts is that they be accessible, and that does not involve great sums of money, or acts as difficult as leaping tall buildings in a single bound.

Getting even some of the more basic comforts can be a serious challenge. Whereas someone living in England might be able to pop into the local grocery and get a weeks worth of delicacies and staples, not so here in my little part of the world. Yes, I must admit it is Portugal, so these things do exist, it’s just that I will have to drive at least forty minutes to get certain groceries, and then venture to maybe two more to collect most of the others. Then, there is the issue of having fruits and veg that are not treated in anyway to lengthen their edibility. This translates into several trips per week to the market, or getting by with rubbery carrots, molded fruits, and limp lettuce. Now, this is the part where you have to weigh the pros and the cons. Obviously, I have decided that giving up luxury in place of beautiful surroundings and fantastic weather for seven months out of the year is my preference.

Still, there is a point to be made here, and tonight when you tuck yourself into your silentnight mattress, or the equivalent, you can ponder it for yourself. Given the chance, would you genuinely prefer to go without such luxuries, and choose a more elementary way of life? Because though it sounds ideal in theory, it is definitively not for everyone. Even I have my limit, and I know where it lies. As, I have friends living in Belize who sleep in hammocks out amongst the elements regularly.

Soon after arriving in Portugal you may identify that chimneys play a valued role in the countries architecture. Perhaps first you will note that many houses have multiple decorative chimneys, and then you might become smitten by the craftsmanship, and artistic element of those chimneys.

Eventually though, one way or another, you are more likely than not to come to wonder what this abundance of, and attention to chimneys and their appearance is all about. Why would one small home require upwards of four chimneys, and can they all be functioning? Well, turns out that quite often only one of the chimneys is in fact functional at all. The others are merely considered a status symbol if you will, and thus only decorative in nature. Just one more curiousity that I adore so much about Portugal. For in my opinion, it is a place in which you may have to look closer to see the cultural elements, and some historical features, but they are here nonetheless, you can rest assured when it comes to that. Sure, you can still see carts with donkeys driven in the fields working the day away, and many other traditional elements are more obvious, but it is those that require a second glance that interest me the most.

Currently we are enjoying some of the best weather of the year here in the Algarve. Therefore, whether we have guests staying with us or not we try to venture out to one of the many gorgeous beaches several times a week. It never ceases to amaze us how each and everyone of them seems to have a personality unlike another.

Therefore, it is difficult for us to agree on just one as being the best of the bunch. However, we do concur that the Dona Anna beach in Lagos is one of our very favourites. Even in the few years that we have been here that beach has had a personality change, and facelift. The personality change was brought on by erosion caused by many natural occurrences, but more strongly than any other a very hard winter of serious rain.

The continuous deluge of water travelling down the side of the overhanging cliff proved to be too much in 2009. The result was the removal of a much loved restaurant and café. First, a section of rock broke off that had been the place of some seating, and then more started to crumble and slip. Much to our chagrin, the restaurant had to be demolished. The only upside has been that a new staircase was put in to access the beach below.

So sad to see that hangout of ours go. Alas, it is strong reminder of the impact of nature’s course, and that those signs saying to beware of falling rock mean business.

Even if you do not have a sweet tooth, you are bound to enjoy the traditional Portuguese custard tarts which you encounter in many of the cafes in Portugal. They are called Pasteis de Nata and are addictively delicious. I still do know if they are best with or with out an additional sprinkling of cinnamon on top. But do know that I enjoy sampling them both with and without that additive that is commonly provided with the purchase of one.

I have of course made them at home, as it is not convenient for me to limit my intake of these delights to a visit to a café. Here is the recipe that I work with. Hope you give it a try, either when visiting Portugal or by making your very own from the recipe, it is really worth it.

Ingredients:

1 cup milk

1 cup white sugar

1/2 vanilla bean

3 tablespoons cornstarch

6 egg yolks

1 (17.5 ounce) package puff pastry

Directions:

Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C.) Lightly grease 12 muffin cups and line bottom and sides with puff pastry.

In a saucepan, combine milk, cornstarch, sugar and vanilla. Cook, stirring constantly, until mixture thickens. Place egg yolks in a medium bowl. Slowly whisk 1/2 cup of hot milk mixture into egg yolks. Gradually add egg yolk mixture back to remaining milk mixture, whisking constantly. Cook, stirring constantly, for 5 minutes, or until thickened. Remove vanilla bean.

Fill pastry-lined muffin cups with mixture and bake in preheated oven for 20 minutes, or until crust is golden brown and filling is lightly browned on top
