One of the finest parts of a traditional Portuguese home, in my opinion, is the wooden ceiling. The beams are quite beautiful in their own right, and when the light beams up towards them at night they are simply stunning. If you are lucky enough, this same roof pattern will continue out on to the external pergola of the house. While it is very common for the pergola to be made of see through slats of wood, in certain places they have been completely filled in to provide more coverage from the blistering hot sun. On the inside and outside, the wood which runs throughout can help the homeowner set the tone of the furniture and colour scheme. We have a light wood, which aids in making the ceilings look even higher than the many feet they are and makes way for the hot air to rise. Though I personally have always leaned towards dark woods, I find that the climate in Portugal does not allow for this selection. For as it is, most of the homes, outside of the expat communities can tend to be very small, and anything that makes them appear smaller are best avoided.
