The Traditional Homes of Portugal Invoke Discussion

The homes in many regions of Portugal have a very similar appearance. You know it, the all white façade, the multiple lacey chimneys, and a big stripe of colour at the foot of the structure. For a long time I drove around seeking out a peek of a home that had a stripe that was more vibrant than those seen nearly everywhere. Blue is the most predominant one I encounter, and I see it a lot.

In fact, the swipe of colour on our house was blue when we bought it, and for many months I pondered what I would prefer when time to repaint came around. I imagined it would not be long until I had my chance to mix it up, as the sun is so amazingly strong that painting will occur more frequently than to that which I am accustomed.

After catching a glimpse here and there of a gentle lilac stripe, a serious green, and a very demure tan I actually began to question if blue were not the best colour for the job. For it might not be tradition that leads everyone to paint blue, nor the belief that it cools, or keeps insects away, but the mere fact that it really does look best.

Being one of those individuals who attended school in a uniform, I have normally taken every opportunity to make my own decisions when it comes to things like colours and styles. Initially I thought to paint the stripe something curious, or striking would be required, but alas I think not. No reason to go against the flow when the flow appears to be going in the right direction.
